Welcome to the 2010 International Workshop on Wood Biorefinery and Tree Biotechnology
21-23 June 2010, Örnsköldsvik, Sweden
Forest trees will be an important
lignocellulosic feedstock in future biorefineries. Important bottlenecks for cost-competitive production of biomaterials and biofuels include the cost of biomass feedstocks, efficient processes for converting biomass to polymers and sugars, and the value of the final products. The scientific challenge is truly interdisciplinary and requires the translation of new findings from plant science, cell wall structure and carbohydrate chemistry into the conversion process. This workshop on Wood Biorefinery and Tree Biotechnology will gather leading expertise from the fields of tree biotechnology, cell wall structure and chemistry, wood processing, and biomaterial production to stimulate contacts and interaction between these fields. To ensure a truly interdisciplinary atmosphere we have confirmed the participation from 24 national and international speakers, as well as scientists from the FuncFiber research network. The meeting will be held in Örnsköldsvik, which is located 100 km south of Umeå and which holds a modern biorefining industry based on wood feedstock.
We believe there will be some exciting days with new perspectives and interactions between academy and industry, visits to a fascinating industrial environment focused on the biorefinery of wood, and the great experience of the light summer nights of Northern Europe.
